According to uncovered emails, the Chicago Police Department reportedly started a secret police drone program last year.

The Chicago Sun-Times reported that the hacked emails show that the Chicago Police Department started talking about the use of drones in the summer of 2020.

The emails discussing the use of drones by the police force were between Karen Conway, the director of police research and development, and a number of high-ranking police officials.

The police department was planning to use money from seized assets in connection to criminal investigations to fund their drone program. These so-called forfeiture funds fall outside the official CPD’s budget.

The police drones were planned to be used to document crime scenes, terrorism-related issues and to help find missing persons.

According to a statement that was given to WGN, the CPD is consistently investigating new technology and strategies and CPD has strict guidelines for all tools and programs to ensure individual privacy. However, the American Civil Liberties Union is not pleased with the CPD’s plans to start using drones as they view unmanned aircraft as invasive technologies that could be deployed without public disclosure or oversight.
