During the visit of US President Joe Biden to the NATO summit in Brussels, the Belgian police made use of a new anti-drone system, the Skywall 100, for the first time. In combination with a drone jammer, this system can be used to attack an unwanted drone. intercept the air and bring it down.
Belgian police deployed new anti-drone system during Biden visit
For police officers, the increased accessibility of the third dimension is an increasing concern during large-scale events and high political attendance. That is why it was decided some time ago in Belgium to purchase a new defense system against drones, the SKywall 100. This is a kind of grenade launcher that can fire a safety net. This allows an unwanted drone in the air to be intercepted, which then comes down to the ground in a controlled manner.
To increase the effectiveness of that system, drone jammers have also been purchased, which interrupt the radio signal between a drone and its driver. In most cases, once activated, the drone will hover in the air for some time, allowing the Skywall100 to be better aimed. And to detect unwanted drones at an early stage, a drone detection system was also used.
The new anti-drone measures were first visible on the streets during the recent visit of US President Joe Biden.
“For the Antwerp Police Zone, it was the first time that the anti-drone device was used for an effective operation,” said Wouter Bruyns, spokesman for the Antwerp police.
The Skywall 100 and accompanying drone jammers were purchased last year as part of the European grant project Skyfall. In addition to the national police of Belgium, the police zone Brussels-Capital-Ixelles and the Romanian police Jandarmeria Romana also participated in this project. The Antwerp police force is the driving force behind the project.
